It's All Good?

I have called Clarksville home for many years, and have recently moved "home" to start creating a college ministry.  As my wife Kara and I have traveled and lived in large cities like Louisville and Virginia Beach, we have found that one of the downsides to living in a big city is TRAFFIC!  You just don't run into any "real" traffic in Clarksville.  In fact, I was listening to a local classic rock station that features a Clarksville traffic report.  I quickly turned the volume up to hear this:  "Well, the roads are looking good today.  Over on Madison Street, traffic is flowing good.  Taking a look at Wilma Rudolph, everything is good.  I-24, traffic is moving great.  That's a look at traffic for Clarksville, I'm ________________ reporting live from ______ FM"

Traffic could have quickly come to a halt...I almost ran off the road I was laughing so hard.  Do we really need a traffic report for Clarksville if everything is good, roads are good, and traffic is moving good?

Hearing this made me think some about typical conversations we have at the "turn to your neighbor" time in church circles.  The pastor stands up and says "Hey make the person next to you feel welcome" or "turn and find someone you don't know and say hey!"  Often times this turns into a "Hey, how are you?" with your new friend saying "I'm good.  Everything is going well."  If truth were told, when someone asked you how things are going you would say "Actually, not good at all."  Maybe it is difficulty with in a class that you are in, maybe a friend is being a real jerk, maybe your significant other is difficult to live with, maybe you don't know how you are going to pay the water bill.  Whatever excuse our minds come up with for not being real and honest, our typical response is simply "I'm doing good."

That's why we have community groups.  For college students, community groups offer the relational time of being real, open and honest with other college students who (if they are being honest) are wading through the same waters of life being tough.  For couples, singles, parents, community groups are the time when we can be honest and you will probably find out that you aren't the only one working through tough times.

If you are a college student, college ministry at Grace Community Church puts community at the heart of what we do.  Yes, we create relevant environments where God's word is taught and you can connect with other college students.  But we believe that life change happens in community.
