Guest Blog: Personal Finance Opportunities by Brent & Julie Matthews

We always wanted to find a way to plug in and volunteer at Grace that would fit our area of expertise and interest well. Too often there were many excuses and reasons of why not to volunteer, but this all changed when the opportunity presented itself to help with financial counseling. The opportunity to assist individuals in regards to their personal finances was a perfect way for us to be more involved, make a difference, and actually do something we enjoy.

Julie and I have been married for 8 years and since day one we have always been extremely responsible in terms of our financial decisions. The reasons we monitor or manage our finances with a fine tooth comb are many. First, our personalities are both wired in such a manner to pay attention to details.  Second, we have seen people suffer through stress, divorce, bankruptcy, and suicide because debt took over their lives. Managing your personal finances is one area of your life that is controllable. We believe that the financial counseling Grace provides is a great opportunity for many families and individuals in the community to learn the ropes of personal finance.  No matter where you are in life, whether you are a newlywed wanting to start the financial journey on the right foot or deeply in debt, this session can help you.

When you hear the words “silent killer,” you automatically think of high blood pressure, but what also comes to our mind when hearing this phrase is debt. No one wants to talk about their debt; it is much easier to keep it in the closet for as long as possible. Debt can be embarrassing, stressful, and extremely hard to manage over time.

Imagine being able to determine where your income is going before it is ever received. Imagine being able to pay your bills on time and have money left over each month. Imagine saving for dreams and hopes. Imagine sacrificing now so that you can retire comfortably. Imagine being able to pay cash for everything. Imagine being a newlywed and not having to worry about the financial part of marriage. These goals are all possible with God, a little planning, and determination.

Talking about your personal finances is hard to do within families and even more difficult to an individual you may not know. Taking the first step of signing up for a session could be the first step in changing the way you manage your personal finances and view money. We encourage you to take the first step; this could be a step that could change your life forever.

Life is a journey that cannot be walked alone and includes managing God’s money to the best of our ability; after all it all belongs to God and we are simply here to manage it.

Grace, thank you for giving us the opportunity to do something we are passionate about and love to do.
