Costa Rica: Jason & Kerby Harpst

We will be going to Villas de Ayarco, Cartago, Costa Rica and partnering with the Abraham Project. It is about 35 minutes southeast of the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica. We will be the Volunteer Teem Coordinators, which means we are responsible for organizing and planning short term mission teams' activities that come from the US. We will also be their "in country guides and translators" when they travel down as well. Other activities that we will be involved with will be assisting with the children's homes, teaching English to the community, and evangelism and activities with the local church.

A little information about the Abraham Project ... It is a mission that was started by a pastor and his wife, along with five other women. They started a church in 1998 with all the money that they had. Today that church has hundreds of members. Their vision has five different areas in order for them to reach a very poor and broken community.

1) Lighthouse Community Church

2) Children's Homes for Abandoned Children: One out of every five homes lives on less that $2 per day and four out of every ten people living in proverty are under the age of twelve. One-third of babies born in Costa Rica are born to unknown fathers. Child trafficking and prostitution are huge problems. One of the focus points of the Abraham Project is to help thse children who are abandoned.

3) Multi-purpose Building: This will serve as an outreach facility for anyone in the community to use.

4) Work Skills Classes and Community Services: Professionals can donate their services, such as lawyers, consultants, therapists, etc. to help those in the community who cannot afford these desperately needed services.

5) Daycare Center: Designed to provide childcare for those in the community who need childcare in order to work. This is a free service to these families.

Construction for the Abraham Project is ongoing and the primary reason teams come to volunteer.
